General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
There's a good deal of speculation I have seen. The murder of Aidan Moffitt does seem to be at least related to an assault on another man on Friday, which resulted in him losing an eye. Initially it seemed to me that the murder of the man last night was not related but I have since seen some reports of similar injuries in both. It's hard to absorb the fact of such brutality - it's like something from a crime program on TV. I would be often enough in Sligo. It's really not a big place.

Gardai are seeking urgent psychiatric assessment. Dreadful that such a young man is responsible for taking the lives of these poor men.A 22-year-old man has appeared at a special sitting of Sligo District Court charged with murdering two men in the town earlier this week.
Yousef Palani of Markievicz Heights Sligo is also charged with assault causing serious harm to another man in Sligo on April 9th last.
The accused was charged with the murder of Aidan Moffitt at Carton Heights in Sligo on April 10th last.
He was further charged with murdering Michael Snee at City View in Sligo on April 12th.

A psychiatric assessment will be interesting... There's a very fine line between literal interpretation of the Koran (or any 'holy' book for that matter) and mental illness.

No doubt the accused had a hard upbringing, history of drug/alcohol/gambling addictions, mental illness or heard God talking to him.....

Naomi Long, Minister of Justice in the Northern Ireland Executive since January 2020 and leader of the Alliance Party since 2016, speaking on the election of Patricia O Lynn in North Antrim.
How would people feel if a man referred to women in this manner? I find it childish, dim witted, and repulsive.

Weird stuff, but Alliance is a non-entity anyway and most of their votes will go back to traditional Unionist parties when people are forced to take sides in any border poll. Having said that, most NI politicians regardless of sex seem to come from the weaker end of the gene pool and so she may have a point.

The Israeli army beating the coffin bearers carrying the body of Shireen Abu Aqleh, a well known Palestinian journalist, assassinated by an Israeli sniper.
Disgusting.

As someone who would be pro-Israeli and the right of their State to exist I am continually depressed by their lack of empathy towards the Palestinians. If any country should understand what it is to be downtrodden....Apart from anything else it's another own goal.

Yeah but them sort of atrocities are ok with the west. Its not really an atrocity in the west's eyes, west turns a blind eye here. Just like iraq, afghanistan, yemen, somalia and the list goes on, and the house of Saud is really a godsend to humanity.
No atrocity to see here, now get back to russian atrocities thats the real news
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Apart from all the politics it made my heart clench in my chest just to see the disrespect to her body and the mourning of her. Burial rites are our oldest civilising activity. Monuments to the dead, treatment of the body post mortem, this is the evidence we use in archaeology and anthropology to build a picture of how our ancestors lived. It tells the human story. It's a primal thing, respect for the dead. I just recoiled at this video and similar ones I have watched of Shireen's funeral.

If you didn't hear it this morning and aren't already too depressed try this segment from RTE's 'The Business' - there's nothing new in it but it's the starkness of the reality that is so utterly immoral.

That's a very good piece of public broadcasting. Frankly I am amazed it is on RTE. Some of what he says, eg what about Yemen, vast corruption with lobbying payments to people in power, the massive stock market increases the companies are unashamedly gleeful about etc, are usually only seen and heard in the supposedly disreputable parts of public discourse. A posh accent helps him.Del.Monte wrote: ↑Sat May 14, 2022 8:26 pm If you didn't hear it this morning and aren't already too depressed try this segment from RTE's 'The Business' - there's nothing new in it but it's the starkness of the reality that is so utterly immoral.![]()

Ireland has its own share of increased military spending cheerleaders that are regularly given too much airtime on our national media. We need to spend money on jets, warships etc. like a hole in the head and the only beneficiaries would be the arms industry.

The Sussman trial began yesterday. He’s the first person to be prosecuted by the Durham investigation, which was to discover where the false ties between Trump and Russia originated 8 weeks before his election and continued well into it.
Should be interesting to see what happens, it’s not televised but transcripts are being released every night.

Some genius tried to smear the Mona Lisa with cream cake, apparently a climate activist. Didn’t realise the painting was covered in bulletproof glass. Not sure though how destroying a national treasure was supposed to help with the climate.

Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
The Irish branch of the family&friends network (and various social and mainstream media) has been getting in a lather about queues in Dublin airport this last week. To listen to the various parties, you'd think it was a simple problem with a quick fix, and that it's all due to Dublin Airport's incompetence.
Hmm. So is DAA responsible for the exact same situation in Britain? For the fights breaking out in Schipol when people had to queue outside the terminal for six hours? For the thousands and thousands of flights cancelled in the US? Frankfurt airport currently has 1000 vacancies, Aéroports de Paris has 4000.
Why is it so hard for people to realise that sometimes a "local" problem is "global" and sometimes the real problem is they, themselves, deciding to do exactly the same thing as everyone else at the same time?

This is the job advertisement for staff who are responsible for making sure nothing dangerous gets onto planes leaving Ireland. A very responsible job. Shift work is compulsory, paid the same rate. The 10 hours you have to be "available" at the convenience of the roster are unpaid. Cannot for the life of me see why people wouldn't be hurtling towards such great opportunity

I really do wish people would take personal responsibility - I flew earlier this month, queued for 35 minutes and at the best STILL taking laptops out, coats off, "oh cant I take this 250ml body wash ???"
Idiots!!!

Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
I hope the DAA are realising their pay and terms are a major turn off. Aldi are paying more for Dublin workers and there's none of this must be available shite. When store assistants in a supermarket have better terms, it's time to look inwards. This is a total DAA problem as everyone was saying that when travel opens up, they'll be traveling. All DAA had to do was ask the airlines of the numbers 3 and 6 months out!

I'd say there's more than a few "loopers" in both the health service and the Public Accounts Committee - nothing to see here.
