General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Making a point about an American bill "Right to Repair" as promoted by Louis Roasmann: "Compromise" is alive & well here in Kildare Street and practiced by TD's of all colour and none. Much "compromise" is being considered when dealing with the "Housing Crisis" here.

Shocking it is - I doubt Ukraine has had such an impact on prices/supply so quickly. The Continental Op wrote: ↑Thu Mar 10, 2022 3:37 pm Maybe we could expand the title of the price of Petrol/Diesel thread?

I'm trying to hold out as long as I can - thankfully the 200 electricity amount I can run the panel heater and take some of the edge off!

Vaguely current affairs. Currently in Australia....
The difference between men and women - I saw the big willy immediately and sniggered and showed the logo to himself, telling him that they had to take it down because it was controversial. Oh yeah, sez he glancing at it, the W does look like boobs alright.

By the way, great news! If desired, one can now post on any social media platform, aka the public square, about the Hunter Biden laptop and all its contents, without getting a ban. Even if you are a large, long standing newspaper, you can post about it all you like and not get censored. Because it's true now, it's in The New York Times which real people read and it's not just makey-up Q anon Russian-plot conspiracy theory shyte.
AHH, it reminds me of that quite weird time a couple of years ago when I was looking with my very own poor little eyeballs at the incredibly disgusting pictures of the US President's son that had been found on his laptop along with massively incriminating emails that showed financial kickbacks from shady business deals reserved for "the big guy" and being told on public forums that it was ALL LIES and that I was a crazy doofus for saying it definitely existed. Good times!

You weren't interested in any unusual influences upon or dodgy dealings by a US presidential candidate - that's completely fair enough. It's hard to take an interest in everything.

Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
The pictures were very numerous and very convincing. Not to mention some were very disturbing, and by that I don't mean ordinary sex, drugs and unfortunately prostituted people. And they were real, it seems. But there was more. A couple of chaps came forward at the time and confirmed the emails, they were businesses partners in some of the deals. All of it was literally hand waved by powerful entrenched political and media people as pure invention. It was an "orchestrated campaign", if I recall.
I don't care so much about the substance of the story, as I don't care who is President of America. It is the gross blatant manipulation of truth, the censorship, the propaganda part that interests and concerns me. How narratives are approved or disapproved and how supposedly private companies like the giant tech platforms leverage their might behind censorship etc.
It is not one incident. It is a huge machine. I just think it is worth noting when time passes and the giant powerful censors are shown to be complicit and wrong. I don't like memory holing.

Fúck NETFLIX - gugleguy has'nt got a NETFLIX account and never did.
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Another thing we were told was true/untrue that turns out to be the opposite - do ye remember when Trudeau and his friends and the media told everyone that the convoy against the mandates was funded by right wing groups, or terrorists, or by foreign sources (depending on the way they felt on any given day)?
It was one of the reasons for the extraordinary measures taken by the Canadian government to freeze bank accounts.
Wellllllll...the RCMP's Director of Financial Crime, Denis Beaudoin, told Parliament there on the 7th of March that this was not true. No evidence of it.
Also Go Fund Me, who famously refused to hand over donations, before having to volte face and refund them, now admits the largest donation was 30 grand from...(dundundun.....not some crazed foreign MAGA fiend but).....a Canadian
It's getting to be a habit now.

Labour has a new leader. Will it make a difference?
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Whilst she may have been the strongest of the eligible candidates for the Labour leadership, Bacik's track record in elections is not stellar. Cannot see her enjoying any sort of widespread appeal with the public.

Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
SF has stolen Labour's clothes for the time being and it doesn't matter who leads the party.
'no more blah blah blah'
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
I think a merger is highly unlikely, not least because of the difficulties of Catherine Murphy, Róisín Shortall and Ivana Bacik agreeing who would lead the merged party.
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Totally agree what you say makes sense, but get the impression that the fact Murphy and Shortall are joint leaders is because neither are particularly willing or able to take a back seat.Mountain wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 10:23 pm I don't know.
Murphy and Shortall can't be around forever, and they've done well-ish so far...but always with a possible meltdown at the next election hanging over them. Merging with Labour now would see them able to take a back seat, hand over to a younger progressive woman (and not a egotistical pig like Alan Kelly) and pool resources. There's less between the parties now she's in charge.
In the admittedly relatively little I've heard from them, I have found Holly Cairns, Cian O'Callaghan and Jennifer Whitmore impressive.
Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
I have said it before. The Soc Dems would do a LOT better if they had a proper leader and not had Murphy & Shorthall "sharing". Murphy I have time for but Shorthall has far too much history. After all, she's a former Minister and Labour member and just seems to sit on the fence about everything.

Two Labour Parties in two countries I would’ve vote for under any circumstances.

Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local
Ya. Holly Cairns is my TD and if she was leader, there would be a good chance of her retaining her seat. West Cork is very "traditional" (it's FF, FG or Healy-Rae wannabe) and Cairns upset the apple cart by getting elected the last time. I'd seriously consider voting SD but not with the shared leadership of forgettable people.

I can’t take that Focus ad with Sister Stan seriously anymore - do we have 6,000 people we can’t find a home for genuinely ? Did we ignore them to bring in thousands from abroad??
Why can’t we deport those here illegally instead of validating them and then free up spaces ? Win surely ??

Absolutely horrific murder in Sligo, which seems may be connected to an earlier homophobic attack in Sligo where a man lost an eye. Just unbelievable.
There was another murder also last night in Sligo. Hard to know what to say. There has been a few violent incidents in recent past.

Do we know yet if the two killings are connected? They have a suspect arrested for the second one.
