The only way i see that this can be sorted via diplomacy is that NATO and the US give guarantees to Russia that Ukraine will not be invited into NATO. If they don't give these guarantees its not going to end well.

Our overlords in the EU and NATO have been empire building for decades and that's what has brought us to the current dangerous situation.

I caught a piece on Pat Kenny this morning about the rewilding of Dunsany Castle Estate and the possible rebuilding of the old Navan railway line which let me down the rabbit hole of Randal Plunkett (21st Baron Dunsany). Amongst the many strings to his bow Randal Plunkett is a movie producer and I came across his 2012 feature film "Guerilla" - full movie on YouTube.

Well worth watching and in the context of this thread a chilling look at one possible future EU scenario..While it's a low budget production the concept is wholly believable.

Apologies about derailing the thread bit I really admire that young man down in Dunsany on what he is trying to do on the estate. Not just lazily planting a load of trees and forgetting about it but proper thought going in on different species habits such as curlews and other ground nesting birds.

Yes I agree he is doing a fantastic job.

Of course the US is only happy when they are dabbling in affairs of no concern to them. And the fact that they can ramp up their military industrial complex to spew out weapons for killing innocents , and make money is a boost for the MIC, plus all their investors.

There was a lot of that talk around in the 80s about America dabbling in Europes affairs, most of it sponsored by the Kremlin. Interesting to see the legacy live on.

The US has no strategic interest in the Ukraine - any more than the West does - it's a cynical use of a small State to fight a proxy war with the Russians and good for arms sales. If Russia occupies the Ukraine it should be made into a pariah but not a single Western European life should be lost in any sort of mad intervention. This is just two former USSR states settling old scores.

If Russa controls Ukraine, then its much harder to stop Russia from making it to Europes western coast if things go wrong, If Nato is in Ukraine then its very hard for Russia to defend Moscow. Russia wants it's old advantage back, plain and simple. It is not in the EU's interest to give to them and all the pointless hand wrining and moralizing about the US won't change that.

Had I any say in the matter, I'm sure a global/NATO/EU freeze on all Russian assets held or domiciled in the western world would quickly bring an unwelcome amount of oligarchic attention to bear on Vlad and his wargames. And in the meantime, were I a Chechen nationalist, I'd be wondering if this was a good time to proclaim independence and kick the Russians out (perhaps with the assistance of some friendly supporters of "democracy" and "freedom" and such like)
