I think he was always going to go to such a role. He didn't want to be Taoiseach and he is a Monday to Friday 9-5 so he might have thought he had gone nationally as far as he could go. Personally he liked to be seen as Prudent Pascal but he was a poor finance minister.

Interesting times for FG now, with a very senior figure leaving and a second bye-election in the offing. Also an interesting one for Mary Lou; SF must surely take the seat and then aim to hold it in the next GE.
