Donald Trump to face Impeachment?

#1

Post by Lumpy Talbot »

Interesting rumours (and it is only rumours at this stage) are surfacing that it is possible that there are cross party talks going on currently in the background between Democrats and 'moderate' Republicans about the possibility of another impeachment attempt on Donald Trump's presidency.

Democrats only need four Republicans to support an impeachment process for the process to get formally under way and there are persistent rumours surfacing that they may have the numbers.

Trump has already faced impeachment proceedings twice which the Republican senate managed to stave off by their majority. There are multiple grounds for 'abuse of office' charges which are impeachable.

Technically there would be little point in impeachment proceedings before the November mid-terms but the persistent rumours of cross party talks suggest that with Trump's increasingly erratic behaviour and a red line for many in the Senate over the recent threats against Greenland that the Republican majority to acquit Trump with 53 seats, Democrats with 45 seats and two Independents voting Democrat the effort would require only seven Republicans to flip and Trump could legally be removed from office.

It is still early days but the level of unease about Trump shows signs of penetrating even with Republican Senators. Still the most likely scenario is a serious gain for Democrats in Congress in November which is where the process may start.

A third impeachment process for Trump may become inescapable by November, which explains Trump's recurring attempts already to try and poison the process in the mid-terms as there is a realistic danger that he could be impeached successfully . Five Republican Senators have announced their retirement so will not be competing in the 2026 Senate cycle. Not a lot of chance of major party flips in those retirements but it is possible that a seismic change in two Senate seats could start making a successful impeachment look possible given there are four or five moderate Republican Senators who could be viewed as likely to support impeachment.

There are rumours around that a third impeachment attempt could be launched before the end of March but I think that unlikely as the maths may not work up to November but may well change by then which makes an attempt post November much more likely.
