Mary Lou for President
Re: Mary Lou for President
Fair dues to the Kingdom, at least they're not afraid of sticking two fingers up to the boyos in Dublin & Cork.

Sure, he's never going to win the election, but I for one would like to see more candidates in the election than Connolly, Humphries and Jim Gavin.
Well done Kerry CC I say.

Jim Gavin says he will only serve one term if he is elected president:

Hmmm. Now where have we heard that before?Jim Gavin has said he will serve just one term as president if he is successful in next month’s election.
The Fianna Fáil candidate has told the Irish Independent he intends to have an “extremely active and intensive seven-year term”, adding: “I think that would be enough.”

Re: Mary Lou for President
I was glad enough to vote for Higgins first time around.
But I thought he was a man of his word and detested him thereafter. Another little gombeen of a maneen. Good riddance and he can take his poetry with him.
Re: Mary Lou for President
You will never see a selection you might approve of while the selection process remains as it is. Just like the Seanad, Joe Public has to accept whatever candidate gets enough votes from gombeen, corrupt politicians. So the President, although directly elected, is unlikely to be "the People's Choice".

Re: Mary Lou for President
Sheridan has his second council, Tipp. Two down, two to go.
Good to see an FG councillor defy the diktat and engage in a bit of common sense.
Fine Gael councillor Mary Hanna Hourigan, who voted for Mr Sheridan, said she did so because it otherwise would be undemocratic.
She said having a "three horse race" for the Áras is not enough.

"He is taken seriously and had reached out to people and councillors for the past year. He is not a fly by night person. I feel we need competition because having a three-horse race is not enough," she added.
"I know we have an excellent candidate in Heather Humphreys and I will be supporting her. Personally, I would love to see Heather Humphreys as President but we have to give everyone a chance.
Re: Mary Lou for President
Unless Sheridan gets a go, I predict turnout will hit record lows. So far we have Micheals sock puppet, the worlds most anonymous woman, and Mickey D in a skirt. Not a lineup to get anyone other than the party fathful out on a wet day.
Re: Mary Lou for President
Heard Gavin for the first time today, asked a question about the Triple Lock. A subject he should be familiar with. Managed to waffle for a period of time without saying anything of any meaning.
Re: Mary Lou for President
Could you see Micheal Martin with his hand up his arse, moving his mouth?

Re: Mary Lou for President
Gareth Sheridan was on Drivetime yesterday and came across pretty well I thought.
He was questioned on his youth and conspicuous lack of public service, and I reckon his answer was pretty smart - that the job shouldn't simply be a plum reward for political and public servant retirees.
Implicit in that in his later comments was the idea that this plum role shouldn't be handed out by Leinster House, which is effectively what will happen if the parties get in the habit of deliberately blocking independents.
Worth a listen: https://www.rte.ie/radio/radio1/clips/22544752/

Re: Mary Lou for President
What odds the establishment parties will whip their councillors in the remaining councils to stop Sheridan in his tracks? Can't have anybody upsetting the apple cart now, can we?

Re: Mary Lou for President
FFG have already instructed their councillors to block him. Presumably Labour and SocDem have done the same.
If he had any chance of disrupting the FFG vote, I wonder if SF might be tempted to whip their councillors on the QT to back him. Seems they'd have the most to gain from a disruptor.
Re: Mary Lou for President
Anyone seen the accusations doing the rounds by a guy called Kieran Kelly about Gavin and Harris (among others)?
Re: Mary Lou for President
Kinda reluctant to repeat them, as they are fairly out there, but if you go through this guys posts you will see them.

Re: Mary Lou for President
Really? I hadn't heard that. Was it common knowledge? I would love to see a decent journalist (where are we going to get one of them?) put Martin and the Stick Insect on the spot as to why they would do that, I know one of the answers would be to facilitate their own candidate, but, if their own candidate has already received approval to run, is it legitimate to interfere in the Democratic process to achieve that? In effect, it is cutting off one of the few avenues available to citizens of this country to hold the highest public office.schmittel wrote: ↑Wed Sep 17, 2025 10:42 am FFG have already instructed their councillors to block him. Re: Mary Lou for President
I always vote because it's the only say we get and plenty of countries don't have that right.
But the 3 so far are testing my resolve.

https://www.rte.ie/news/2025/0906/15321 ... sidential/"Fine Gael public representatives cannot in any way facilitate the nomination of any candidate other than the ratified Fine Gael candidate."
It continues: "In the event of a vote at any local authority on the nomination of a person other than the ratified Fine Gael candidate, the Fine Gael local authority members are whipped to oppose that nomination."
It may yet backfire. I hope it does.
Re: Mary Lou for President
Yeah, for my sins, I tend to ignore the day-to-day adventures of Ireland's Tories. Must do better, but Harris' simpering, inane grin beaming at me from any page is the ultimate turn off for meschmittel wrote: ↑Wed Sep 17, 2025 11:22 am It was fairly widely reported at the time they did it:

There's a claim that he got a girl who works in Croke Park pregnant.
And another that he had an affair with a second Dublin football players wife. It’s widely known within the Dublin GAA hierarchy about him sleeping with players wife’s.
Remember, a few hours of trial and error can save serval minutes of reading the README!
Re: Mary Lou for President
Mary Lou is such a tease...
Equally unlikely to make such a big deal about some unknown no hoper.
https://www.thejournal.ie/sinn-fein-pre ... 0-Sep2025/
Could mean anything, but presumably she wouldn't be making such a big deal about the impending announcement if it was simply to back Connolly.“Sinn Fein’s participation will be a game changer in this election – it’ll be very much game on.”
Asked what she meant by a “game changer”, McDonald said: “I mean a game changer, Match of Day, Up For the Match.”
She said the campaign did not start until nominations close on 24 September.
“On Saturday, we will set out our position, we’ll set out the logic and the intent of our position,” she said, stating that it is important to have a president who espouses the “values but also the ambitions of Ireland at this point”.
“I think the decision taken by us, we’re a large party, we’re a national party, and a national organisation. I think we’ll be very influential in this contest,” she added.
She said Sinn Fein had to balance two objectives, to get Fianna Fail and Fine Gael out of government and out of the Áras.
The next president must advance Irish unity, says Mary Lou McDonald.
“That’s what our campaign will aim to do.”
