Re: A 'movement' for a 'new republic'

Martin opined that Europe was grand and benefiting from inward migration. What bloody planet is he living on, in politics far too long and out of touch with the public mood. Whatever about anything else, Trump should have put him back in box as regards that matter. What evidence is there that he is...

Re: A 'movement' for a 'new republic'

Martin probably hesitated because he couldn't believe his ears, and then the moment passed amid all the shouting. In the noise and chaos, Martin missed the moment when he could have intervened and issued a correction. The whole thing was chaotic, noise and shouting from journalists, withTrump in a ...

Re: A 'movement' for a 'new republic'

Well, Trump misgendered Catherine Connolly, referring to Ireland's President as "he". In fact Trump's whole rambling presser, wandering from one topic to another, referencing bizarre conspiracy theories, blathering, back-tracking, talking total nonsense...well, it was a tad worrying. Whil...

Re: General Current Affairs Chat - Global and Local

I'm almost afraid to say it, but I think we have more evidence from both France and Germany that the far right's advance may have at least temporarily stalled. The first round of France's mayoral elections were held yesterday. The RN held on to their one incumbent large city mayoralty, Perpignan, an...

Re: A 'movement' for a 'new republic'

Makes that pre election delay to the housing figures much more egregious now. Though in fairness when they said we have "turned a corner" they didn't say which corner... I think those figures refer to 2025, not 2024. However the situation is disastrous no matter what way you look at it.

Never mind retrofitting, we don't seem to be able to build in the first place:-

Apparently housing starts fell to 16,000 last year, down 75% (and 84% in Dublin).

No matter how early you phone, my GP is queued out. You have to be careful about repeat prescriptions for vital medications--don't leave it too close to the time you are due to run out of meds. My GP won't give repeat prescriptions without seeing the patient first. But if the next available appoint...

Re: A 'movement' for a 'new republic'

I can't see an appropriate thread for this but this seems to be a catch-all Irish political one at this stage and it relates at least somewhat to climate change. This article is behind a paywall but the headline seems to sum it up fairly well. As someone who has had to shell out massive sums for ess...

Re: A 'movement' for a 'new republic'

Yes, I have heard many negative stories about the NHS, which is sad as it used to be a wonderful service. Or at least it was, when I lived in London years ago Down here I notice that friends who have an older GP get to see him/her (usually him) at any hour of the day or night These older doctors ar...

More evidence that Farage and Badenoch are in a hiding to nothing as regards Trump in general and Iran in particular:- 67% of Brits see themselves as anti-Trump, and only 13% as pro, while 70% see Reform as being pro-Trump. Huge majorities of all party voters other than Reform see themselves as anti...

I agree with you on this. I really don't imagine Merz sees this as a disastrous result. Could be a the start a trend, could just be a blip. It does show that climate change is still a relevant issue to voters, despite Merz's deprioritizing it in favor of business growth both to the voters he wants to court and to the attitude across the pond. What I think is also worth noticing is tha...

Two small pieces of relatively good political news from Europe in the midst of the all the woe. First, Swiss voters have rejected 62-38 a far-right proposal to cut the licence fee to the country's national broadcaster. Such proposals are rarely about the cost of the fee and more usually about giving...
